Whilst I adore making things by hand, I am not a dyed in the wool purist. For me, design ideas ebb and flow between digital and handmade, so the digital realm is equally fascinating, but for different reasons.

The imagery below was generated with AI. I asked it for an elaborate paper flower card. I didn't quite get a card, but the image is still quite appealing, and gives me lots of ideas for making something by hand.

AI as a Design Companion

If you're interested in AI, you'll soon discover that regular use on some sort of paid plan, rather than a free version, can bring useful benefits. For example, a paid plan of ChatGPT (Chat Generative Pre-trained Transformer) will give AI access to longer-term memory, with access to details shared across all previous chats, instead of only recent conversations. Practically speaking, this feels like you're working with a familiar, capable colleague, and allows you to create content that builds upon what you already worked on together. In longer sessions, AI can hold onto more context, which means it can generate content that corresponds with your evolving preferences. Output such as imagery, writing and ideas, start to feel completely aligned and tailored to your brand voice.

The first design is handmade, and the second is a digitally enhanced version produced with AI, in response to my request for pale turquoise tones. AI produced a whole new design which worked perfectly.

Harnessing AI for Designers

While AI doesn't possess the human qualities that make design and art meaningful, it is transforming the way we approach creative work, through enhanced efficiencies. Learning to communicate effectively with AI will help us to;

  • automate repetitive tasks

  • create faster workflows

  • come up with endless creative ideas

  • generate impressive visual content

  • make design choices driven by data

When you look at some of the amazing visual art on Pinterest, and consider what went in to building that digital muscle memory, you start to see the collaborative potential of AI.
