By using layers, textures and embellishments, handmade cards take on a tactile quality that elevates the design and adds to the visual appeal. The subtle use of dimension takes our imagination on a magic carpet ride from crafting to storytelling.

Adding three-dimensional elements to handmade cards

There’s something about a handmade card that invites you to pause, and really consider and admire how it was made. Dimension and texture, in the context of cardmaking, are storytelling devices that draw the eye, and breathe life into a design. Layering different materials and adding interesting embellishments enhances their tactile quality. A remnant of vintage linen affixed with a few hand-sewn stitches can magically weave a piece of the past into a new storyline, creating something meaningful for the recipient.  The same delight in small details runs through making miniatures for handmade cards which is worth a look if you haven't seen it. 3-Dimensional elements are less about decorating a surface, and more about creating miniature scenes. In the same way, I love using little animations to breathe life into digital imagery. It's all about having fun.
