I found some pre-cut felt flowers on Etsy recently, and what started as a little idea ended up filling several afternoons. What does slow creativity look like to you?

The Slow Creative Path

The arrival of a bag of plain felt flowers in my letterbox initiated a fabulous few days of slow creativity. There was nothing difficult involved, just layering and embellishing. My dining room table was overtaken with all kinds of potential decorative bits, tipped out, sorted and arranged. I used micro beads, glass beads and bead clusters, as well as ornate bindi and seed pearls. The way the colours shift and shine depending on what you put them with is one of my favourite aspects of making things by hand.

Finishing Touches

Eventually, some of the flowers found their way onto cards, but in some ways, the end product was incidental; the real magic is in the process. What transforms a finished flower into a card can be a few simple lines drawn with a fine-tipped ink pen (these were drawn with a Staedtler Pigment ink 0.3); it's the kind of drawing that doesn't require any particular artistic talent, just a willingness to make a few lines without over-thinking. Use a pencil if it feels better. The drawn element somehow grounds everything, giving the dimensional embellishment somewhere to live. Each card ends up completely unique, even though the components started out identical. I love building creative time into my week, and I hope you do too.
