Creative Card Toppers

Some of the cutest cards revolve around a single element - a card topper - which is a great reminder that creativity doesn’t always require more materials, but just the imaginative use of what you've already got.

I reuse the elements of pretty, store-bought cards, and this little purple elephant was cut from an old Birthday card.

The Play Phase

The Play Phase of card-making is my favourite part - it’s where imagination expands beyond the obvious and fresh possibilities unfold. Lay your card topper in the middle of your workspace and start auditioning backgrounds as if you’re trying on outfits; a bright stripe or a pastel floral, ornate texture or classic plain, colour or white, sparkly or velvety: even the smallest nuance nudges things in a new direction. Pull papers you might not normally pair together, layer textures, and rotate patterns to see how the visual rhythm changes. The most delightful combinations appear when you follow curiosity instead of rules. This stage isn’t about getting it “right,” but about noticing what sparks joy. Rather than relying only on the mind, try using your intuition as a guide. Most of us do this anyway, without realising, but adding a gentle pause is all it takes. Try it. Give yourself a moment to notice how something feels when you’re assessing options or making decisions; when you sense that lift of positivity, or a small spark of excitement, follow it.

Using a single card topper on different backdrops can shift the mood of a card completely.
